Situated in the middle of
the Rondeña mountainous countryside and wide areas of
chestnut, holm- oak and cork trees dominate its municipal district.
The town centre, is placed like a watchtower on a hill at a
height of more than 800 metres above sea- level, made up of
low- lying houses located on both sides of narrow, winding streets.
Although there are findings that prove the Hellenic presence
in the area, its historical origins are practically unknown.
Cartajima excelled during the War Of Independence for the fight
it put up against the Napoleonic troops and in which excelled
the guerrilla Andrés García, who rebelled against
the Governor of Ronda.
During the Nineteenth Century, the town experienced a great
economic boost due to the cultivation of vine crops and the
exploitation of the iron deposits, around which a cannon factory
was built, with Cartajima coming to be known as “Little
Cádiz”.
Here you can visit the medieval castle and some
archaeological sites of a certain interest, and the Church of
“Ntra. Sra. Del Rosario”, from the Sixteenth Century,
is the place´s most important monument.
The festivities in honour of “La Virgen
del Rosario” take place in mid- August.
