Located in the western border
of the Province of Málaga it has a population of 1.100
inhabitants, here we find a municipal district with a privileged,
natural environment which extends through the valley of the
Guadiaro River and la Sierra de Libar.
Its population is of Arabic origin, as is its
name, which means “Lost Mountain”. In those days,
Montejaque had a great importance in the area, even having a
medieval castle, no longer standing, with minarets from which
part of the “Serrania” was watched over.
The most important monuments here are the Church of Santiago
El Mayor, built in the Sixteenth Century and the place known
as “The Bridge”, where we can still see the remains
of a Roman bridge over the Campobuche River.
To enjoy the local festivities you have the
Fair of August, in honour of La Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción”,
is celebrated from the 12th to the 15th of August.
Its gastronomy is well known by, “el guiso
con pata” is the most popular dish, faithful reflection
of the pig slaughtering traditions of the town.
